I mean you all must be remembering the strict attendance rules in your colleges. If you don't have 75%(90% in some cases) attendance, you will loose 5% of your marks, or worse if you are a student of Banaras Hindu University, you will have to loose one year and study the full year again! Oh yes, this happened to a lot of people i know. And when those poor kids begged in front of teachers to give one or two attendance so that they can achieve their 75% target limit, the teachers used to shoo them off!But this news made me so happy, i cant tell you! (click here)
Go you blood suckers! You Loose!
PS: For additional reading, go to Abi's blog. He is a super senior from my alma matter. The post is from a teachers perspective, but i loved some of the comments!
Edited to add - I called them hypocrites because they as students to attend all the stupid classes, but when government asks them to do 40 hours a week, they start crying that they wont be able to do research and blah blah! Not Fair!

Dear its nt happn to ur university only ....happen to mine also .... someone had 74.6% attendance and had to reapeat an year dude !!
I have never come across such severe cases.... but if this is the case.. its really bad...
I don't understand our system.. saala the teaching quality sucks in 90% of colleges and the attendance is mandatory... what will a student learn in a stupid teacher's class..
Well, this is no where related to Hippocrates!!! And all teachers Hippocrates?? don't think so..
I thought all these were just dhamkis..Never came accross something like this happening in real...Good for me;-)
that makes study not that easy. all pressures and inconsiderate teachers. but i still believe there are others who understand. one just have to pray and hope they fall into the supervision of these considerate teachers.
if things turn abusive, maybe students can unite and voice out their minds. give them a lesson.
I love the hues and cries amde by teachers in this regard.. from long time we are saying that 'jiyo aur jino do' .Imposing mindless min. attendance rule. I so much agree with Animesh Sir comment on Abi's blog..
Thank God! I was not in BHU. I always had short attendence during my colg days . My attd was always 75% . Exact! Bada dukhi kita si jado ik vaar 73% attd si. Bahut manaya apni lecturer nu. We were not allowed to give our semester exams if our attd was not 75%
The term I like to use is "over-constrained systems". The purpose of the college for students is to get an education. That is checked automatically by the constraint of homework/midterm/finals.
The fact that univs feel the need to put an extra constraint (viz. attendance) on students 'for their own good' shows that they themselves acknowledge that the homework/exam system is failing (mostly because of laziness on the teacher's part, who won't give interesting questions, and are not willing to clamp down on plagiarism properly).
Anyways, (if and) when I get to join Indian academia, I hope to push for changing this stupid attendance rule.
cheers,

Hell Yeah !!!!!!!
There should be a limit of 40 hrs per week working limit on proffs too. Specially in IT , I have seen condition of ceramic eng. deptt in bhu, all coz of laziness of proffs!!!
On top of htat 6hrs a week for research is the best thing, now htey will work on some damn projects instead of eating pans with labor or gossipping all over the place in IT-cafeteria !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
u know, have been reading your blog for quite some time , and it gives more information than i realise. the best thing is that you dont make it seem like work .
as for teachers , i really wish that teachers could do with a bit more of the knowledge which they themselves impart .
Ridiculous rules...
